E komo mai. Welcome.

A fascinating community in ancient Hawaiian civilization existed that we know little about.  This civilization hid inside its language and culture a language with symbolism that enabled individuals to achieve great things that most people could not.  These people were called The Kahunas.  Kahuna in the Hawaiian language had a dual meaning that is found. The first meaning is “the keeper of the secret.”  And the second meaning is the “keeper of balance.”   When you break down the parts of the word “Kahuna,” it is very intriguing with all the different parts meanings.  For instance,  “Ka” means light, while “huna” means secret.  Secret and huna also means protected treasure or hidden from view.  Now, “kahu” means an honored servant while “na” means to care for.  You bring all these meanings together and you have a servant for the people who is the keeper of great wisdom.  The Kahunas were a unique people.  According to different researchers the Kahunas were also specialists.  They specialized in certain aspects of life so that they became very good at their specialty.  It is said that there were over 60 types of specialists and there were 20 different specialists in the healing arts alone. The Kahunas were to serve all people with humility and respect.  They were intimately involved with families in their community and were known to know all the details regarding the village they served.  As a matter of fact, they were so involved in their village and incredibly knowledgeable that they could recognize and dissolve potential problems before they even occurred.  The Kahuna were role models for their community.  Not just anyone became or could become a Kahuna.  These role models were carefully chosen. Since these leaders were so necessary for a village to thrive it was required that every Kahuna train new leaders.  The community depended on the kahuna to train replacements and expand the leadership in the village.  The worst thing that could ever happen to these leaders was to lose trust from their village.  Bragging, making false claims, and failing to do what they could do were some of the ways that a Kahuna would lose the trust of their community.  Western Civilization feared these people.  Western Civilization and other Hawaiian’s ultimately put an end to this civilization. Leaders are a vital part of any community.  Leaders just like the Kahuna are vital to our community.
